John Hanson, owner and maker, of the Longfellow Soap Company will teach the cold process method for making natural soap, with each participant receiving a manual with equipment list, ingredient list, recipe, and "how-to" instructions. Each student also gets to take home 5 bars of soap!

This is a demonstration class, as lye is used.

John Hanson, owner of The Longfellow Soap Company, has lived in the Seward and Longfellow neighborhoods for many years after moving to Minneapolis to attend Augsburg College. With a work history of 32 years in retail and another 12 in woodworking and carpentry, he began making soap after winning a class through a fundraiser event for the Friends Quaker School in St. Paul.

What started as gifts for family and friends turned into products in high demand; people started asking to buy John’s soap. He decided to approach Twin Cities Co-ops and grocery stores that support local products that don’t harm the environment. From one account in 2014 (Junket was the second store to sell his soaps) to nine current stockists, John’s soaps are a hit!

His "flavors" are made with a twist. Exfoliates used are made from lemon peel, orange peel, lavender flowers, and cedar and pine sawdust. All the soaps are natural and biodegradable, made with high quality olive, coconut, and avocado oil, and scented with pure essential oils. Each batch of soap is hand cut and packaged by John, then delivered fresh to local stores.
