For young people, capitalism means crippling student debt, environmental destruction, racism and sexism. In just the past five years, we’ve seen the Occupy movement against inequality and the 1%, the Fight for 15 struggle against poverty wages, the Black Lives Matter movement against racism, and now Bernie Sanders’ call for a “political revolution against the billionaire class.” Throughout his campaign, internet searches for socialism and capitalism have skyrocketed. People want to fight back against the injustices of capitalism.

Bernie Sanders’ campaign has ignited millions and intensified the discussion about capitalism and socialism. We need to find a way to continue his political revolution against the billionaire class in this election and beyond. Bernie’s version of “democratic socialism” involves many excellent reforms like better wages and guaranteed health care, but while these positive changes would be excellent, we also need to educate ourselves about how to decisively end a whole system based on exploitation and oppression.

In the US, the heart of global capitalism, millions of people – especially young people – now identify as socialists. We need to get organized to make a difference and change the world
