Time Out says

'J' was born in 1978 as a true hermaphrodite, with male and female genitals, and began this DV film with Choi in 2000 (at the time she was J's college roommate) as a kind of Hermaphrodite Lib project. It was left unfinished, and by the time Choi picked up the pieces three years later (it was her graduation project at Chung-Ang University) J had opted for surgery to become 'fully' male. Being Normal must be the most intimate and revealing account ever made of this sexual conundrum and its psychological repercussions. J describes 'his' childhood memories, his attempts to live as a girl, his failed relationships and his ambivalent feelings about Choi and the project itself as he strives for an unattainable 'normality'. There's no neat closure: J's life remains a work in progress.
