Time Out says

The story of an Australian doctor between the wars. Ostensibly the subject is the young war surgeon's early exposure to the theories of Freud, through to his eventual disillusioned settlement in a comfortable Sydney psychiatric practice. But the real concern is with the texture of Australian social life (in its broadest possible terms) between the wars. Thornhill's direction of the actors is low-key enough to allow the repressive nature of Australian life to emerge from a meticulously controlled mise en scène.
