The Utopia created in Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure is threatened by two robot doppelgängers of the meat-headed, mop-topped duo. These two Terminators travel back in time to present-day San Dimas, California, and swiftly despatch the real Bill & Ted. But death is only the beginning... The first Bill & Ted movie remained a minor cult in Britain, but this far more cinematic sequel deserves a wider audience. Winter (Bill) and Reeves (Ted) make a comic pairing to rival Laurel and Hardy, blundering through life - and the afterlife - with an endearing naivety (when the Grim Reaper promises them their lives if they beat him at chess, they suggest a game of Battleships). The eventual triumph of US junk culture is somewhat offensive, even if prophetic, and there are a few naff ideas; but for those who appreciate dude-speak and bozo humour, this is a very funny film.
