Time Out says

Kieslowski's film was originally suppressed under Martial Law for its gloomy political prognosis. It offers three quite distinct possibilities for Poland's future by having a former medical student running to catch a train from Lodz to Warsaw. First, he catches the train, meets an old-style Stalinist, and joins the Party. Second, he misses the train, gets arrested, and is jailed with dissident students. Lastly, he misses the train again, gets married, and settles down to sexy and apolitical bliss. A fourth story, in which Poland throws out the Communist Party, was presumably unthinkable in 1982...
