Russell Crowe lends his gladiatorial narrator gravitas to Bra (pronounced “brau”) Boys, a documentary exploring the lives of one of Australia’s rowdiest surfer gangs. Director Sunny Abberton and his board-riding brothers, Jai and Koby, happen to be longtime members of this rough-and-tumble Aussie tribe, so the film is essentially an insider’s look at what big-wave–riding Down Under is all about. Despite some harrowing missteps—one of which results in a murder trial—these siblings display a loyalty to their mates and to one another that is rather touching in this age of superficial friendships and mercenary values.
