An ex-junkie district attorney (Berenger), tempted by the crack pipe and fighting police corruption, chases a homicidal street thug (Rhymes) with a penchant for throwing hookers’ babies out the window. Dramatically handcuffed and smothered in overbearing mood music, this lightweight New York crime thriller is desperate to look and feel gritty; the cast, meanwhile, deliver vein-popping diatribes between clenched teeth and weep openly in a desperate ploy to earn gravitas. The whole production feels like a rejected Law & Order spec script writ (slightly) larger.
