Closing Escrow

A barely twitching entry in a mercifully moribund genre, this mockumentary about three suburban SoCal couples enduring the rigors of home-buying attempts to hop a ride on Christopher Guest’s coattails. Mean-spirited caricature, overplayed quirkiness and chintzy production values are nothing without heartfelt observation, though, and real-estate transactions are particularly unfunny when they serve as the basis for repellently misfired antiracist humor. The resulting property is an eyesore not even Frank Bascombe would try to unload.
