Hints of a Rear Window-style thriller give way to an unorthodox love story when teenage postal clerk Tomek (Lubaszenko) confesses to spying on artist Magda (Szapolowska). The older woman's interest is piqued, and though initially angry, she draws him into a tremulous, ultimately humiliating love affair. Kieslowski maintains a dispassionate objectivity, and presents the simplest gestures, expressions and words with calculated restraint, allowing the audience to bring their own compassion to bear on the ill-fated relationship. Mature and profoundly moving. Expanded to 87 minutes, the theatrical version was called A Short Film About Love.
