Satiric savings mart Super Club is the setting for this tepid big-box Clerks, a cut-rate comedy that bundles rising star Dane Cook with a handful of less charismatic B-list jokers. Cashier Amy (Simpson) has a rep for boning the best salesman, which fuels a showdown between slacker Zack (Cook) and overachiever Vince (Shepard) for the crown of the film’s title. The genial but uninspired cast members do what they can with the discount material—even the wit-challenged former Newlyweds sensation looks bored by her generic dialogue—and end up with bargain-bin laughs.
