Despite a certain predictability in the ending, Masson's film is an unusually bleak 'meeting of misfits' drama, in which Kiderlain's sacked Boulogne fish-packer - she dreams, vaguely, of becoming a singer - moves virtually at random to Lyon, and meets Giovaninetti's terminally depressive labourer, just dumped by his girl because he's scared of women. Determinedly downbeat in its raw realism (the soundtrack includes Marianne Faithfull and Nick Drake!), and packed with strong performances from various young stalwarts of the New French Cinema, it's well observed, intelligently written, and finally quite moving.
