Though a forced philosophical thread—the belief that outcasts all have an “inner fat girl” that must be embraced—runs through it, this feature film from 22-year-old writer, director and star Ash Christian is still a sweetly compelling treat. Rodney Miller (the spot-on Christian) is an awkward, show-tune–loving high-school queen who lives with his God-fearing parents in small-town Texas. Bright spots include his obese, extroverted best friend, Sabrina (the slightly over-the-top Fink), and his English teacher (Tarnation’s Caouette). While Rodney’s parental drama is not fully developed, the gay themes are played out beautifully.
