Rainer's second feature takes 'performing' as a central theme and metaphor. The protagonists are at once dancers, actors and lovers - for others, for an audience. The context they are set in constitutes a remarkable juxtaposition of visual and verbal descriptive methods: inter-titles, written texts, voices off, dance, slides and acted sequences. Insight, irony and wit are marvellously combined, reaching a height in the appropriately labelled central section, 'An Emotional Accretion in 48 Steps'.
