Fine Mrtve Djevojke

Just over some train tracks in a dustier section of Zagreb, a young woman named Iva (Pakalovic) accuses Olga (Apelt), a wheelchair-bound crone, of kidnapping her son. Rewind to sometime previously, when Iva and her lover Marija (Violic) move in to a claustrophobic apartment building ruled with a meddling fist by the monstrous (and then-ambulatory) Olga, who also presides over her long-suffering husband, their nasty son, the prostitute next door, and the abortionist upstairs. Matanic’s slim, inexplicably titled film makes deft use of slightly off-kilter camera angles and panther-like dolly shots, and soon brings the hothouse atmosphere to an impressive boil.
