Time Out says

While most teens infuriate their parents with offenses far less wholesome, the heroine of this plodding adaptation of Mary O’Hara’s 1941 kid-lit novel, My Friend Flicka, clashes with her father over her bond with a mustang filly. Equine-obsessed Katy (Lohman) hopes to work on the family’s Wyoming ranch, but her disapproving dad (McGraw) wants her to graduate from a pricey prep school and apply to college. As Flicka nears its overwrought ending, and a reckless ride causes Katy to fall gravely ill, we feel more concern for Lohman’s career (still smarting from last year’s Where the Truth Lies) than her character’s well-being.
