Viewers may quibble over the pressure director Abu-Assad places on Palestinian mini-bus driver Rajai Khalib – filming him delivering pirated DVDs, for instance – but there’s no denying how well he shows how the physical restrictions and omnipresent roadblocks faced by Palestinians are part and parcel of their political, social and emotional deprivation. Rajai himself, with his relentless energy, courage and wit, exemplifies much of the tenacious spirit of resistance of his people. And the myriad passengers’ interviews – including those given by a range of invited persons from an archimandrite to filmmakers and politicians – give a fascinating overview of Palestian society, most of time stalled in traffic.
