Video-store geeks, pornography and reclusive weirdos: all staple indie movie themes this comedy embraces with gusto. Jason Ritter is the nameless, homeless clerk who regularly rents erotica to a sullen, silent loner (writer-director Marianna Palka). Smitten, he starts to stalk her, attempting to talk his way into her apartment, life and bed – although this porn fan doesn’t seem too keen on any real-life action.
What’s her story? That’s the driving force behind the plot, but while the build-up is intriguing, the simplistic denouement is a let-down. The idea of a sexless female porn addict is a fascinating one, but the character development is too slow, and the reveal too sudden. That said, there’s humour in Ritter’s dogged persistence and the witty script, and the chemistry between the leads is undeniable (it’s no surprise to learn that they’re partners in real life). ‘Good Dick’ is enjoyable as a cute, playful indie – it’s just not as perceptive about female psychology as it sets out to be.
