Time Out says

3 out of 5 stars

Herb and Dorothy Vogel earned fame for amassing an expansive modern-art collection on meager salaries (he was a postal worker, she a librarian). After 40 years of corralling, their one-bedroom apartment hosted more than 4,000 works by names like Christo, Nancy Arlen and Richard Tuttle. This sequel doc to 2008’s Herb & Dorothy tracks the ripple effect of the Vogels’ shocking decision to scatter their bounty across 50 states. The tangential artist interviews and constant lionizing of the star couple meander, but given how museums between the coasts rely on collectors for life support, 50x50 still acts as a provocative call to arms: Those who love art must support it.
