The John Ford legend about tearing pages out of the script to get back on schedule may have inspired director Vincent, but he only seems to get the pages out of order, doggedly pursuing his labyrinthine plot down blind alleys, stopping on the way for a number of discreetly shot couplings, as his leads endure years of separation and a passionate reuniting. Great romantics like Griffith and Chaplin never had the advantage of hot-tubs, but Vincent's blend of slush and flesh must presumably be considered part of the tradition.
