Deploying his slender resources across what looks like about two acres of some Italian quarry, Bava shifts his plastic cactus about from shot to shot and stirs up furious dust clouds in a touching attempt to evoke the rolling Western plains. This was a very early spaghetti, and the director can't quite hit off the right tone, as he ploughs through a narrative encompassing two buddies (Beel and Sleem), an outlaw gang, the cavalry, Indians, imposture, rape, massacre, the colonel's lady and Rosie O'Grady, a bank hold-up and the Civil War. The bright reds and yellows flashing through the dust are pretty, but otherwise this is strictly for collectors of cinematic waifs and strays, its level exemplified by those 'Indian' extras trying to fathom, on camera, how to work their bows and arrows.
