Divorced Harvey (Hoffman) is an aging jingle writer trapped in a desperate slump. Just when things look bleakest, he begins sparring with Kate (Thompson), an airport worker with problems of her own. The connection is undeniable, but will they try to deny it anyway? Visually dull, Last Chance Harvey doesn’t feel much like cinema. But to watch Hoffman and Thompson flirt is to witness two unlikely stars recapture the essence of their appeal: The tiny neurotic is suddenly Romeo again, while the cool Brit melts. A commentary track features director Joel Hopkins chatting with his headliners.—Joshua Rothkopf
