Like the hero of Goethe's The Sorrows of Young Werther, on which this is based, adolescent Guillaume - much discussed but never seen - commits suicide over a love affair. Despite his death, the pangs of unrequited love that brought it about continue among his friends. Indeed, Ismaël (Jolé-Ménébhi) and Théo (Brémond), having found Miren (Capello), the object of Guillaume's love, make a move on her themselves, breaking up with girlfriends and straining their own friendship. But just as Guillaume's friends never really knew him (or, for that matter, themselves), so we never really get to understand them.
