Time Out says

This excels in the fast-paced action sequences more than in the sometimes over-developed buddy-gag exchanges between Gibson's manic cop Riggs and Glover's dependable Murtaugh. An example comes early on: Murtaugh, a perilous week away from retirement, and Riggs, carefree as ever, bypass the bomb squad and contrive to blow up an entire skyscraper office block, a spectacular destructive orgasm which isn't aided by rather crass dialogue. Following on from this is a set-to on an ice-hockey rink, a hair-raising chase between two speeding security vehicles, and some typically vicious violence. Though Gibson gets a martial arts girlfriend (Russo), Murtaugh has asked the crazed Leo Getz (Pesci) to sell his house, and the plot occasionally touches on the stuff of the LA riots, what this sequel delivers is still the kind of high-speed roller-coaster action that producer Joel Silver's films often do so well.
