Time Out says

3 out of 5 stars
Young Mac (Daniel Magder) is devastated when his father (Bruce Greenwood), an oil engineer, cancels their DisneyWorld holiday to take him on an emergency trip to Canada in a bid to salvage a costly drill from the bed of a vast lake. While dad searches for the equipment, Mac explores the woodland with a local girl, where they stumble upon a narrow warren that leads to the cave of Mee-Shee, a delightful water giant. Meanwhile, corrupt oil drillers are on a mission to sabotage their rival, but when they discover the lake’s more valuable asset, it becomes Mac’s responsibility to protect his new friend. Designed by Jim Henson’s Creature Shop, Mee-Shee is brought to life via digital and animatronic technology, but the effects are too cheap looking to supply a realistic monster. That aside, the film offers decent performances, most notably from Rena Owen as Crazy Norma, and practical messages to do with families and the environment.
