The illegal crossing of Mexican immigrants into the U.S. to seek work is a
highly charged topic. But no matter what side of the border you're on
politically, Tommy Davis's gritty documentary (the title is Mexican slang
analogous to "wetbacks") captivates by showing the all-too-human side of this
polarizing issue. Armed with a handheld camera, the director—a gringo—makes the
treacherous trip to Texas with a quartet of migrant laborers. The four emerge as
Mexican everymen: funny, macho and willing to risk everything to provide for
their families back home.
