Anker begins his documentary with the question, what is music?—a query that even
his subjects, the 105 seasoned musicians of the Philadelphia Orchestra, struggle
to answer. Their inability to fashion a satisfying response gives the film an
unfocused, somewhat haphazard air. But maybe that's the point: Though all part
of the same classical ensemble, each of the individual members has his or her
own distinct personal attachments to nearly every variety of music, whether
playing it, hearing it or recalling it. It's a concept that both band geeks and
Britney fans (especially Britney fans) can appreciate.
