Time Out says

You can take the phoenix-rising actor out of straight-to-video trash, but---well, you know the rest of it. Mickey Rourke demonstrates untrustable instincts with this swooningly pretentious piece of carnival drama, about a wayward jazz trumpeter (Rourke), the gangster he pisses off (Murray) and the angel-winged circus freak (Fox) he comes to lovingly protect. Had this been directed by Wild Orchid's Zalman King and shown up late at night on your TV set, you couldn't be blamed for sticking around for some salaciousness. Alas, the kicks are few; apparently, everyone thought they were making a new Wings of Desire.
