Picasso and Braque Go to the Movies

Time Out says

We know how the static visual arts affected early cinema’s vocabulary, but how did the moving pictures inspire Cubism’s two towering giants, Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque? Arne Glimcher’s doc traces the ways these film fanatics borrowed from the flickers and reimagined the concept of “seeing” creative imagery. Beaucoup clips-to-canvas comparisons are backed up by executive producer Martin Scorsese and friends dropping science, but don’t start salivating yet, cinegeeks. Glimcher’s interest in this pivotal moment is undone by an inability to move things beyond a molasses-slow pace; it’s a 60-minute documentary that feels like days of watching paint dry.—David Fear
