A fascinating if only partly successful film by Godard's former collaborator. A documentary about six-year-old twins, Grace and Virginia Kennedy, who for years spoke in their own private, impenetrable language, it frustrates partly because, by the time the film was being made, the girls were already losing their own language and beginning to speak in broken English. But Gorin's open depiction of his own effect on the girls' lives while making the film, his portrait of sterile lower middle class American family life, and the innate interest of his subject still make it highly absorbing.
