Time Out says
Hawks' most maudit film: a motor-racing melodrama with a cast of then-unknowns who have (with the exception of Caan) remained unknown. There is undoubtedly a certain classical finesse to Hawks' dovetailing of thrills on the track with spills in the boudoir. But even the most devoted Hawksians have acknowledged that this rehash of favourite characters and situations is strictly Formula One...and non-Hawksians were thinking out their emotional problems in rather different terms by the mid-1960s.
