Although writer-director Jeff Winner’s second feature is rife with indie clichs—a gamine leading lady with a foreign accent, a terminally hip soundtrack by an underground rock band—this New Wave--style romance has its heart in the right place. Two malcontents fall in love at first sight. Within days, they’ve quit their jobs and are leading an exhilarating if marginal life of petty thievery. How long can they subsist on impulse and passion? Unlike the films that inspired it (Pierrot le Fou comes to mind), Satellite wraps everything up in a happy package, which is surprising, though a bit disingenuous.
