Signs of desperation here: like the aptly titled Lovesick (made later, though shown in Britain first), this Dudley Moore vehicle uses every trick in the Hollywood book to tug at the heartstrings - not to mention the pursestrings - of whatever bankable generation lapped up the lachrymose Love Story a decade ago. Six Weeks might have worked in 1932, but looks decidedly dodgy in the tense present. Who'd believe a congressional candidate would take time off to enrich the last weeks of the fatherless, leukemia-doomed child of a perfume heiress? And if that heiress happens to be the still glam Mary Tyler Moore (her throat's not what it was, but then neither is Dud's), who'd believe the relationship would remain platonic? The Moral Majority will lap up every tear-jerking minute; if you're lucky, you may just be able to keep your lunch.
