A characteristically stylish piece from Siodmak, who nevertheless looks somewhat constrained by budget and genre. Chaney is fine as the Count (not, note, his son, despite the title), masquerading as one Alucard when he turns up in American Deep South society, and woos Louise Albritton over to the vampiric cause. But the script is far from wonderful, and offers Siodmak little to get his teeth into, notwithstanding a beautifully atmospheric first entry for the Count (Chaney and coffin rising from the misty depths of a lake) and an effective finale.
