Two men sit sweltering in their underwear in a cheap hotel room; apparently awaiting instructions, they exchange threat-edged banter and play with a copy of ‘Crime and Punishment’. This Pinteresque set-up plays out in a voyeuristic mode, with a ‘Psycho’-style spy-hole to the room next door and a camcorder used to review the past and keep the present at one remove. Sound design compounds the claustrophobia, with ambient noise (traffic, insects, radio) threatening to drown out the dialogue; when the action opens up, the outer world takes on the menacing an air that has built up in the room.
