Documentarian Billy Corben (Cocaine Cowboys) takes the edge off with three tales of '70s marijuana smuggling in South Florida (the title refers to bales dropped into the ocean from planes). Ranging from Coptic Christians who claim herb as a sacrament to disenfranchised fishing families hauling a different kind of catch, Corben's weedheads are a colorful lot. But if violence ever comes into the picture---and considering the illegal millions made from trafficking, it strains credulity to imply it doesn't---we don't hear about it, as Corben wants to paint the subjects as drug-war martyrs. His arguments would go over better if he didn't spend so much time blowing smoke up our ass.
