Stranded in Canton

Drawn from hours of video Eggleston shot while hanging out on the night streets of Memphis, it’s an oft brutal, oft beautiful ode to partying, fighting, freakish flaneuring and friendship. Attaching no hierarchy to his gaze, he films the wild denizens of the boulevards and tenements in all their outlandish glory, the distance between lens and subject shortened considerably, given the artist himself was often down and dirty with the best of them. Now, in a culture that can produce both ‘Jackass’ and ‘Gummo’, ‘Stranded…’ speaks with a prescient outlaw voice to our increasingly manic present.
