Time Out says

Soporific yarn from a novel by Kate O'Brien set in 16th century Madrid. Olivia de Havilland is Ana de Medoza, a widow with a Moshe Dayan eyepatch, who stirs up unholy feelings at court. Scofield's King Philip II has a crush on her and is furious when she starts an affair with one of his ministers. The film falls victim to spectacularly fussy production design and Robert Krasker's 'Scope photography. Everybody's decked out in best medieval finery and we're treated to endless picture postcard shots of historic Spain, but there isn't a hint of any sexual tension between de Havilland and Scofield.
