Time Out says

Leave it to World Wrestling Entertainment to produce a sensitive coming-of-age period piece about tolerance and dignity. Featuring lord-of-the-ring Randy Orton and coming just months after the company's other unexpected family pic (The Chaperone), this unlikely heart-warmer shows a '60s grade-schooler (Ellison) coming to terms with geek exile, cootie-fearing classmates, his first major crush and the controversy surrounding the unstated sexual preference of a popular teacher (Harris). Lessons are learned, bullies get their comeuppance, and every Wonder Years plot device is trotted out for maximum and-I-was-never-the-same-again nostalgia.
