The Golden Boys

Time Out says

Three sea captains (Carradine, Dern and Torn) decide that one of them should marry, so they’ll have someone to do the dishes; enter Mariel Hemingway, who appeals to two-thirds of them. Although it’s set in 1905 Cape Cod, The Golden Boys feels more like a Western, especially with Torn playing a Walter Brennan--esque role. More interesting than the characters is the milieu itself, particularly once the film introduces a clash between a temperance nut (Charles Durning) and a billiards-hall owner (John Savage). But even that can’t dispel the sense of time a wastin’.—Ben Kenigsberg
