Those disappointed by Schlöndorff's stolid output in the '90s will welcome this look back at the '70s and the era of 'idealist' terrorism. A group robs banks in the name of the international victims of capitalism. Flash forward to the aftermath, when the remnants of the group go into hiding in E Germany, the state sponsoring of their activities, which they discover is less than a socialist utopia. Adjusting to life as a worker and ever nervous of recognition, 'Rita' (Beglau, excellent) is forced to analyse her past activities and loyalties, as she forms new relationships which test her principles and her freedom of action. A mature work directed with thoughtful sobriety.
