Some have asserted that Joel Schumacher is cinema’s Antichrist, but as this ridiculous thriller proves, he’s more like the medium’s anti-Midas. Once the director applies his touch to this story about a book reader (Carrey) who starts seeing a certain double digit popping up everywhere, the whole thing turns to lead. Each scene is either over- or underlit, the star is left to indulge in Batshit Crazy 101 tricks, and those faux-noirish fantasy sequences would embarrass a first-year film student. This isn’t even the Showgirls of paranoid conspiracy numerology flicks; it just adds up to sheer ineptitude. (Now playing; Click here for venues.)—David Fear
