This second screen adaptation of Richard Matheson's classic sci-fi novel I Am Legend (the first was The Last Man on Earth, 1964) still doesn't succeed in conveying the exultant paranoia of its original as effectively as (for example) Night of the Living Dead. In Matheson's story, the last man on earth was besieged by vast numbers of vampires, the victims of an apocalyptic plague; but this version substitutes a few albino mutants for the vampires, and reduces the original's brilliant cross-fertilisation of Gothic myth and doomsday fantasy to an averagely competent exercise in comic strip sci-fi.
