Time Out says
Lush but rather leaden remake of Anthony Hope's Ruritanian romance, establishing some sort of continuity by casting Lewis Stone, star of the 1922 version, in a supporting role as the Cardinal. Entertaining enough, though Granger is merely competent by comparison with Colman in the 1937 version, and Thorpe hasn't a tenth of Cromwell's style. Mason, though basically miscast, runs away with the acting honours as a Teutonically villainous Rupert of Hentzau, and Joseph Ruttenberg contributes some attractive Technicolor camerawork.
