Rooted in Hui's research into real-life 'boat people' refugees from Vietnam, her third feature is essentially a doomed noir romance which incorporates - as Hong Kong movies do - everything from action thriller shoot-outs to a transvestite hooker and a dwarf cabaret troupe. The charismatic Chow Yun-Fat plays a Vietnamese-Chinese refugee who's trying to smuggle himself from Hong Kong to the US when he gets stuck in Manila and enmeshed in its vice; Lo Lieh (fondly remembered as the hero of kung-fu movies like King Boxer) is memorable as an ageing Chinese roué who's been marooned there for years.
