War of the Monsters

Although Godzilla doesn't really cut it in the special effects department, he does have a certain lumbering charm. So does the script: Godzilla fights off monsters from outer space to save Tokyo from colonisation by a group of intelligent cockroaches with imperialist tendencies (the only species to have survived pollution on their planet). The monster battle is overlong, though the one with a rotary saw in his chest (a Texan?) is a novelty, and like the others, all too obviously a man in a moth-eaten suit. They bump into each other to see how often they can fall down, and Godzilla takes some time to find his pace. As he's floored again and again but comes back fighting, his performance more and more resembles Stallone in Rocky, even to the mumbling. If you're in the right silly mood, kind of fun.
