Paul Newman has nothing left to prove, so we can be thankful that he's still generous enough to turn it on for this modest caper movie. We first see him being wheeled into hospital, but nurse Fiorentino soon suspects there's more life behind the drooping mouth and empty eyes than the medical report suggests. When she eventually gets him to drop his guard, he shares the secret that he's a veteran thief who's tricked his way out of jail by feigning a stroke. He's waiting to collect on a stash, but not before putting naughty ideas in Fiorentino's head. While there's just about enough plot to be getting on with, most of the pleasure in the film is simply watching Newman get on with it, sparking dialogue off Fiorentino, playing gruff and grizzled with the driest sense of humour. He's so comfortable on screen you never catch him acting, and it's a bespoke role. Thankfully, Fiorentino has enough presence to go a few rounds with him.
