Spurred cowboys are stalking down Southall Broadway, and stetsons bob up and down suburban streets in this engaging film about Country & Western-obsessed British Asian kids who form themselves into a band, the 'Honky Tonk Cowboys'. Likely to be referred to as an Asian version of The Commitments, this cuts much deeper than Alan Parker's Irish ensemble piece. Harwant Bains' script makes pertinent points about culture and identity, but without pushing them in your face. Naveen Andrews (wasted in London Kills Me) gets a chance to show what he can do, and Sarita Choudhury (from Mississippi Masala) gives a nice performance as the female lead. Attwood's direction is a touch undisciplined, but there are some nice allusions to classic Westerns.
