Wondrous Oblivion

A sweet coming-of-age tale set in South London in 1960, Wondrous Oblivion is the story of 11-year-old David Wiseman (Smith), a Jewish boy who’s mad about cricket—but not terribly good at it. When a Jamaican family headed by Dennis Samuels (Lindo) moves in next door and clears the backyard for a miniature cricket pitch, David learns more about the great English pastime, as well as English prejudice. Such life lessons are stock liberal tropes by now, but Wondrous Oblivion is grounded by its precise sense of place and easy good humor. (Opens Fri; Quad.) — Tom Beer
