The IMD recorded temperatures 5.1°C above normal, with some relief expected as weather patterns change

Mumbai, we know that October can be a really sweaty affair, but this time, it's a big deal. The city sizzled at 38.2°C on Monday, October 12, 2026, recording its second-hottest October day after 2015.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), temperatures at Mumbai’s Santacruz Observatory rose 5.1°C above normal as the city continued to experience post-monsoon heat. The IMD attributed the spike to an anticyclone over areas adjoining Gujarat and Maharashtra, coupled with easterly winds along the coast. These conditions delayed the arrival of the sea breeze, which typically brings some relief from the heat.
While there might be some respite on the horizon, the IMD expects temperatures to ease with wind pattern changes and the anticyclone weakening.
However, the yellow warning is issued for Tuesday, October 13, indicating humid and hot conditions in isolated pockets. The temperature on Tuesday afternoon was recorded at 37.0°C and 34.0°C in the Santacruz region and the Colaba observatory, respectively.
Monday’s hot weather came just a few days after Mumbai experienced another spell of extreme heat on Friday, October 9, when the temperature hit 37.8°C – around 4.7°C above normal.
Monday's reading crossed that threshold, making the October afternoon feel more like peak summer than the start of the festive season.
Additionally, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) considers a heatwave in coastal regions when the highest temperature rises above the seasonal average, with a departure of 4.5°C to 6.4°C meeting the relevant threshold.
October traditionally marks a gentle transition away from the monsoon and into a mild winter – especially significant given the large number of festivities dotted across the month.
It's a month with a packed calendar, festive and otherwise, with not only Navratri, Durga Puja and Dussehra being celebrating across different communities, but also loads of music festivals, exhibitions, and more.
